Paving the Road to Success

Don't Travel Alone

Find others who have the same vision of success as you and stay close to them.

We don’t mean that you should find someone else with the same definition of happiness with you to spend your life with, although that is a good tip for building a long-lasting relationship. Instead, we mean you should seek out people who share your niche interests and form friendships in that space.

Doing so will not only provide you with a more intellectually, stimulating life, but it will also motivate you to keep going.

“Celebrate the success of others. High tide floats all ships.” — Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Follow Your Passion

When considering your path to success, you have to go with something you love to do.

If you’re doing something you love, the chances are that you will find a way to make it work towards your success. If you are doing something just because it seems like a winning idea, you will hit a dead end even though you are not really passionate about it. It may take years, but eventually, you will burn out.

Besides, it would be best if you did not make your life unhappy to justify some goals you might reach once you are old. It is essential to enjoy the journey.

“Stop chasing the money and start chasing the passion.” — Tony Hsieh

Stop to Enjoy the View

Every now and then, it would help if you stepped back from your path to success, take a breath, and admire what you have accomplished.

Even the world’s most driven people need a break from the grind sometimes. Do not feel bad about giving yourself one.

In addition, taking a look back and bathing in your own sweet success is a great motivation to keep at it.

“The only time you should ever look back is to see how far you’ve come.” — Mick Kremling

Plan Ahead

While enjoying your accomplishments, take time to look forward to your path and decide how you’re going to proceed. You might even write down an actual plan of what you hope to accomplish when, and why.

This is the part of the road to success where online resources come in most handy. You can use expert advice from sites like One Percent Better to help formulate your plans.

“Four steps to achievement: Plan purposefully. Prepare prayerfully. Proceed positively. Pursue persistently.” — William Ward

Learn from Failure

Do not stigmatize failure. Whatever you need to do to succeed, you’ll almost certainly fail at least once. It’s completely normal and expected.

In fact, failure can be turned into a valuable learning experience if you handle it right. Turning mistakes into opportunities is the kind of advantage you need if you are going to come out on top.

“Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really: Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure, or you can learn from it, so go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember that’s where you will find success.” — Thomas J. Watson

Be Effective, Not Efficient

Make sure that everything you put effort into actually helps you work towards your goal, instead of just doing things so you can say you accomplished more.

As Stephen Covey writes in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, most people are obsessed with efficiency. They are scared to take time to regroup and refocus. Don’t be one of those people.

“It’s better to do something with quality, no matter how long it takes you rather than do something mediocre, with constant quantity.” — Auliq Ice

Never Give Up

Finish everything you start. Giving up on your goals, even if they are little goals, is a dangerous practice that leads to low self-esteem and a poor work ethic.

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” — Thomas Edison

Accept Your Niche

You can’t be good at everything in life. You have your specialties, your unique talents. Focus on those things, because that is your niche. Let people who specialize in the things you’re not good at taking care of those areas.

That concept is called division of labor, and it’s how the world works. Accept that, and you’ll be free to focus on succeeding rather than trying in vain to complete tasks you’re not equipped to handle.

“Very narrow areas of expertise can be very productive. Develop your own profile. Develop your own niche.” — Leigh Steinberg

Don't be Disingenuous

Always be honest and authentic to yourself. Never try and project a false image because it will only result in uncomfortable fits that make you unhappy.

For example, let’s say you are in love with a job prospect you read about, but you know that the company culture is extremely casual. You are a very conservative and generally formal person. It might be tempting to put on a false image at the job interview so you can make it look like you fit with the company culture. Don’t do it! If you have to put on a fake self to be accepted at the company, we guarantee you will not like working there!

“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality, and duplicate it.” — Bruce Lee

There is not just one road to success. All of the paths do have their similarities, though, and these tips will help you to build your road map to success no matter what kind of person you are.
