Step 1: Learn What You Need to Put in the Two Weeks Notice

You’ve come to a decision and figured out that leaving your job will improve your work life. Still, you may be hesitating or don’t know where to start.

  • Effectivity date of resignation

  • Last day of work
  • Date of formally handing in your resignation
  • The name of the company
  • Key people
  • Signature and date when you signed it

Step 3: Consider Adding a Section Showing Your Gratitude

Regardless of how you feel about leaving, it’s good practice to thank the company for giving you opportunities and for what you learned from working there. It’s important to avoid any negative feelings during this process, especially since you may need to ask for a referral from them down the line.

You can add a few paragraphs thanking them for the time and opportunities. In this section, you can add:

  • How long you’ve stayed in the company
  • Around two to three key responsibilities that shaped you as an employee

By adding a couple of sentences or paragraphs showing your gratitude, you leave a favorable impression.

People always think starting on the right foot is best, but it’s easy to forget that how you end things with your employer is equally as important.

Step 4: Make a Good Closing

A good closing is just as important as crafting a good introduction to your two weeks notice letter.

In a corporate setting, a good farewell means:

  • Leveling expectations that you’ll still be performing your duties in your remaining weeks
  • Offer to train your substitute
  • Assist in the transition

To clarify the dates in this template:

10/18/2019 — Date when the employee wrote the letter

10/20/2019 — Date when the employee sent in the two weeks notice letter

11/1/2019 — Last day of the 2nd week

11/4/2019 — Effectivity Date: On this day, the employee officially stops working for the company since he or she has already fulfilled the last two weeks of work promised in the letter.
